The Republic of Costa Rica, located in Central America is bordered by Nicaragua to the North, Panama to the South, the Caribbean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Costa Rica means “rich coast” in Spanish.

In 2009 The New Economics Foundation ranked Costa Rica as the greenest country in the world.

In 2007 the Costa Rican government announced their plans for their country to become the first carbon-neutral country by the year 2021.

 

COLORFUL WILDLIFE

Costa Rica is renowned for its wide variety of plants and animals.   The country has only about 0.25% of the total world landmass yet it contains 5% of the worlds biodiversity.

NATURAL POOLS OF WATER

Costa Rica boasts the largest percentage of protected land area in the world.  Within Costa Rica 25% of the land is designagted as national parks and other protected areas.  Compare that to the ‘developed’ world average of 8% and the ‘undeveloped’ world average of 13%.

 

STUNNING WATERFALLS

 Costa Rica boasts hundreds of breath-taking cascading waterfalls.   Thanks to the abundance of freshwater in Costa Rica they have managed to generate enough hydro electric power to meet a significant amount of their energy needs.

AN ECO-DESTINATION

In 2012 Recreational hunting was banned in Costa Rica making it the first country in the American Continent to do so.
